Basset Hound Training

Basset Hound training is not an easy matter for a beginner. First-time owners are not recommended to buy a puppy of this breed, because it requires profound knowledge and skills to bring up a well-behaved dog of this breed. However, adult and senior Basset Hounds make good pets for people of all walks of life. The original purpose of the breed is trailing and driving game away during the hunt, so Basset Hounds are very inquisitive, intelligent and active. They cannot be quiet lap dogs, because they need much mental stimulation and a task to do.

Punishments and reprimands don’t work with this sensitive breed. To succeed in Basset Hound training, the owner should take into consideration a strong hunting instinct of the breed, the personality of the dog and use only positive motivation. Human interaction and food are the things Basset Hounds like most of all. These dogs enjoy tasks that let them use their nose. Drill and simple repetitive exercises are not for the Basset Hound; this breed likes difficult tasks and challenges. This breed is not good at obedience and cannot be trained for the role of a guard.

Basset Hound training and housebreaking can take much time. The owner should be consistent and patient; otherwise it is impossible to form friendly relations with the dog. Some owners say that Basset Hounds are not clever, but the facts prove the opposite. Even if a dog doesn’t respond to commands, it’s a good problem solver. Basset Hounds are intelligent enough to think ahead and get out of a closed room or steal food when they want it. Howling of a Basset Hound may be a sign of a coming storm or earthquake. There are many cases reported when Basset Hounds saved their owners. However, such signs are noticed only when the bonds between the owner and the dog are strong.

An unsocialized and poorly trained Basset Hound turns a life of the owner into a nightmare. Curious and inquisitive Basset Hounds mess around, chew on everything, howl and don’t obey commands. Lack of Basset Hound training is the main reason for surrendering these dogs into rescues.
