Basset Hounds originate from France. A French word "bas," which stands for "low" in English was obviously a good choice for coining the breed's name. It described fully the dogs that were bred by French nobility and monks to hunt in thickets. Short legs and bulkiness did not allow the dog to develop great speeds. It was especially important for hunters on foot. In the 16th century the breed appeared on the British Isles. The Bloodhound, Foxhound and Dachshund contributed to the Basset's appearance and sense of smell. Foreign lines were also added. The breed was first shown in Paris in 1875. A few years later, in 1883, the Basset Hound Club was formed.
Basset Hounds Pictures - It's Present Day Functions
Unlike many other breeds, the Basset Hound did not lose its original functions and did not end as a pet to keep company only. Thanks to its perfect nose the Basset can hunt rabbits, pheasant, and other game. It usually hunts in packs, but can perform the job on its own. Determination and energy of Basset Hounds are fully realized during such hunts.
Basset Hounds can take part in tracking. In fact, their superior sense of smell enables success in this field. Tracking tests determine the dog's ability to track a person and locate small items. Training should begin early. Bassets need positive reinforcement and do rather well in this canine sports.
The breed is also good in obedience and conformation. There are various levels at which the dogs can compete. Thus, the Basset Hound Club of America offers three types of obedience Classes for Basset Hounds. They are the Novice, Open, and Utility Classes. Depending on the Class and their success in performance, Basset Hounds earn titles to become the pride of their owners.
