Basset Hounds Pictures - Care

Basset Hounds do not need specialized care. They have a short coat that does not require a lot of grooming. Yet, regular brushing and washing will help to avoid excessive shedding and a hound odor. Bassets also need a lot of exercise. These quiet dogs are surprisingly inquisitive about the world and everything that goes on around them. Unfortunately, many breed owners are deceived by Basset Hound appearance and do not realize its needs.

Attention should also be given to health issues in Basset Hounds. It is recommended to buy puppies from a certified stock. Both parents should be OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) and CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) tested. Bassets should be examined yearly to exclude affected dogs from a breeding session.

Since Basset Hounds may experience bone problems, they should not be overstrained at an early age. High jumps and difficult climbs are out of the question. A well balanced diet based on products rich in calcium should also help prevent hip problems in the dog.

Like all long-eared breeds, Basset Hounds may suffer from ear infections. Thus, regular ear cleaning is essential. Nail clipping is also desirable if the dog's nails are too long.

Since Basset Hounds are prone to overweight, they should not be allowed to eat any food that comes up. It is true that treats are instrumental in training any dog. Yet, sweets should be excluded from the ratio since they can cause allergic reactions in Basset Hounds.
